Travel information
Chalet Emma is at Les Collons in the Val d'Hérens in Valais, Switzerland within the 4 Valleys ski area. Sion is the capital of Valais and is nearby at the bottom of our valley with airport, railway and access to the main roads along the Rhône to Lake Geneva and Geneva itself.
Chalet Emma is ski-in/ski-out subject to snow conditions. While our team at the Chalet have a 4x4 available to help with your transport during your stay, we recommend that each party has available one car for their own use or road access to higher ski connections at Les Collons and ski school at Thyon. We have parking spaces available close to the Chalet.
BY AIR
Our nearest major airport is Geneva which is the destination for a number of budget airlines including Easyjet, Flybe , Jet2 and bmibaby flying from across the UK - book as soon as you can to get the best deal !
You can fly direct to Sion with snowjet from London Stansted which is so convenient and operates during the winter.
As our changeover day is Sunday you will avoid much of the ski traffic on Saturdays when you can enjoy a day's skiing on your own with the locals.
BY RAIL
Swiss train operator SBB operates with great efficiency from Geneva airport to Sion taking less than 2 hours. Trains depart regularly from the airport terminal - well sign-posted and close-by. Return tickets cost approx. CHF 96 per person and can be bought at the terminal or beforehand online (
www.sbb.ch).
Mski can arrange transfers between Sion and Chalet Emma - please discuss this with us in advance of your holiday.
There is the option to travel by train all the way from UK to Sion via Paris using Eurostar, SNCF to Geneva and SBB to Sion.
BY CAR TO CHALET EMMA
Maps and directions are shown below. Cars can be hired at the airports - availability on the day can limited so please book ahead. Search engines such as www.travelsupermarket.com can help with the best prices. Please be sure to hire a car from Geneva from the Swiss sector of the airport which will be usually priced in £ or Swiss Francs - a car advertised in €/euros is likely to be French and inadvisable with access only via the French half of the airport!
Car hire desks at the airport are to the right of the arrivals area with a free bus service to the cars themselves. Cars are usually returned with a full tank of fuel - there are pumps just before the hire garage on the right.
You will need chains for your car in the mountains: winter tyres generally cope and the Swiss do a god job clearing the roads but chains are a legal requirement.
SELF-DRIVE
This is a popular option. The distance from Calais to Sion is approx. 530 miles. The best route from the UK direction is from France to Switzerland via the E23 through Pontarlier, south of Besançon.
AA routemaster can give you complete directions.
